Privacy Policy
Last updated: 18 October 2026
UnfollowScout is built privacy-first. The core promise is simple: your Instagram data export is parsed and analyzed entirely in your browser. Your followers, following lists, and the usernames in your results never leave your device and are never transmitted to or stored on our servers.
What we store on our servers
When you create an account, we store only the minimum needed to run the service:
- Your email address and a securely hashed password (managed by our authentication provider).
- Your subscription plan and billing status (managed by Stripe; we never store card numbers).
- A counter of how many free actions you have used, to enforce plan limits.
- The names you give your profiles, and when and how many times each was analysed (never the results). Analytics may also record counts, such as how many non-followers a scan found, but never who they are.
What stays on your device
Your uploaded Instagram export, the resulting follower and non-follower lists, snapshots, and favourites are stored locally in your browser (IndexedDB). Clearing your browser storage removes this data permanently.
Third-party processors
- Stripe, for payment processing and subscription management.
- Our hosting and database provider, to store your account email and subscription state.
- PostHog, for product analytics on this website and in the app. We record which features are used (e.g. an upload finished, an upgrade was viewed) to improve the product. Analytics events never include your followers, following, or any usernames.
- Google Analytics, for visitor statistics on this website only (not in the app).
- Microsoft Clarity, in the app only, for session recordings and heatmaps of how pages are used (clicks, scrolling and page layout), so we can find confusing screens. Clarity is set to mask all on-screen text, so usernames are not recorded.
Analytics and cookies
Analytics start when a page loads; they don't wait for you to accept the cookie notice. We don't currently offer a separate setting to turn them off.
- PostHog stores a random visitor ID in your browser (local storage and a first-party cookie shared between unfollowscout.com and app.unfollowscout.com), so we can see which page you arrived from when you sign up.
- When you are signed in, PostHog links your activity to your account ID and your account email address, together with your plan. This is how we see whether features help paying and free users.
- Google Analytics sets its own cookies on this website, and Microsoft Clarity sets its own cookies in the app.
- We also use essential cookies to keep you signed in and to process payments. You can block or clear cookies in your browser settings; essential cookies are needed for signing in.
Data requests
You can delete your account at any time, which removes your email and subscription record from our systems. To request deletion or ask a privacy question, contact us at the email listed on our site.
